“Disasters” is a show of abstractions based on two different tragic events. The Spanish artist, Angel Haro, reflects on the heartrending death at sea on the 12 of August 2000 of 118 Russian sailors who drowned together when the nuclear submarine ‘Kursk’ exploded in the artic sea, sinking and leaving no survivors. Haro’s work uses an iterative process, using multiple canvases and digital layering to combine and overlay images in the development of these works, which explore the sailors’ internal desperation and the horror of asphyxia. Wille and Nyoni’s collaborative work is based on a tragedy of different, and less obvious (but no less meaningful), nature. They reflect on Mahatma Gandhi’s eviction from a train at Pietermaritzburg Station in 1893. This event marked the beginning of Gandhi’s Satyagraha (peaceful resistance through non-violence) movement. Wille and Nyoni focus on this disastrous injustice as a moment of reckoning, distilling the architecture of the site into subtle abstractions. The artists have similarly used a layering approach, in this case making use of a combination of rubbings of features from the site with digital and silkscreen printing. |
