‘Velocity’  is  an exhibition of new photographic  work  by Paul  Freinkel and  Michael Smith. The show sees the artists exploring  visual phenomena,  each contemplating motion within established  conceptual concerns.  In both bodies of work, the tension  between the still, photographed image and the movement of their subjects produces fertile terrain for contemplation.

Freinkel’s images,  with their rich tones of  black and blue, are part of a body of work that explores photographically the interplay of movement between phenomena and how it grounds perception. The images  touch on  a  rich  variety  of references: Colourfield Painting's  all-over  compositions,  sonar  scan  images'  ghostly figuration,  even  the  striations  of  digital  imagery.   All these allusions are, however, grounded in the knowledge that  Freinkel's are photographs of everyday observed phenomena.

Smith’s close-ups of smoke have as their central concern an interest in the body. “Smoke is quite anthropomorphic: moving like limbs and also ultimately dispersing like the body. These works continue  an  interest  in  the body’s dissipation through eating disorders, and contemplate the skewed contemporary sense of body aesthetics, the images often suggesting skeletal forms and X-rays of bones.”

Collaborating in the show is Paris based composer, musician and artist David  Hykes. Recorded  versions  of  Hykes’s deeply meditative harmonic chant accompany the visual images on exhibition.
