Faces

“Appearances like words can also be read and, amongst appearances, the human face  constitutes one of the longest texts” –  John Berger. Since they are the synopsis of character and soul of a person, Resolution gallery’s Next exhibition examines photographic and painterly representations of faces.  The show comments on the contrasts and similarities between the photographer and painter’s vision and rendering of faces.  It presents novel and diverse approaches to portraiture and the capturing of likenesses, personalities, moods and spirits.  Spanish artist Angel Haro has contributed his series of ink drawings entitled “Typologies” - which were inspired by the complex South African identity - to the exhibition.   Diana Hyslop’s prints reflect a recurrent concern with the human figure, with birds – a symbol of both physical and spiritual freedom and flight - featuring prominently in her work.  Alf Khumalo’s evocative portrayal of history through faces is contrasted with 25-year old George Mahashi’s contemporary, stylized renderings of beauty.  Also showing at the exhibition are the works of Mark Shoul and Sally Shorkend.
